A little chalk on cardboard.

In a small space at the exhibition ‘Danger and Beauty’ in Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle we look at Ozon, a video film by Elise van der Linden from 2008 which gives us a sublime experience in two minutes and six seconds. What is a sublime experience? Something that goes beyond everything, something awkward, all in all. We walk around and see the sublime experiences of artists like Ruisdael, Turner, Monriaan, Tjibbe Hooghiemstra, Armando and Jasper Krabbé who share their experience with us. Lots of beauty, but not without danger. Storms, blazing fires, ship breaks, immense spaces, hydrogen bombs.

The rolling scenes of Turner and his contemporaries, precursors and imitators on canvas or panel, beautiful all, but then you should actually be alone and lose yourself. In the museum it is way too busy. You can better retreat in that small space, a mini-cinema, and lead you into the half-darkness by the video of Elise van der Linden (Deventer 1983). The sun is about to set. Elise turns us into a stormwind that rushes over endless landscapes, following the sun. Elise makes sure we travel as hard as the earth turns under our feet. Thus the sunset continues to last forever. Absolutely danger and beauty, as Museum de Fundatie promised us. Turner almost pales in comparison.
